NO-SHAFT TENSION-SENSING IDLER ROLL

 (ROCHESTER, NH, USA--December 19, 2000)  A pair of Model RS™ (Roll Shell) Tension Transducers from Dover Flexo Electronics (DFE) can be used to quickly convert a metal tube (roll shell) into a shaftless, tension-sensing idler roll. The roll assembly is then installed easily in the web path of a continuous process machine or web press as part of a web tension measurement or control system. 

A special design feature of the RS™ transducer, the expanding-collet connection collar, allows the transducer to insert smoothly, and lock tightly, into each end of a machined aluminum or steel tube. The result is a ready-to-use tension-measuring idler roll—with no idler shaft or bearing hardware—that can be quickly incorporated into the web path of a machine frame.  Because the transducer collar fits perfectly within a roll shell's inner diameter, looseness and resulting wear are prevented. 
 
 

DFE can assemble complete tension-sensing idler rolls for customers at the factory, but the company expects that many customers will prefer to purchase RS^TM transducers separately and assemble them with their own roll shells. 

Benefits of use include:
· Cost savings.  There are no shaft or external bearings, and customers may supply their own roll if they wish.
· Roll strength. With no shaft to flex, the roll provides high resistance to bending.
· High resonant frequency.  The lower mass of the RST's shaftless assembly produces a high natural frequency.  This transducer assembly is ideal where resonant vibration is a problem, as in certain high-speed applications.
· Suitability for hot webs.  Roll Shell Transducers are designed with axial expansion capability to accommodate hot rolls. 
· Low run-out.
